Cindy brings together photography, sake, food, and community to connect and to create unique encounters through her storytelling.

What a great tour of @suishin_yamane in Hiroshima. 🍶

Founded in 1868, the brewery is closely connected to the renowned Japanese painter Ikuo Hirayama, who was born in nearby Setoda and had a long relationship with the brewery. His artwork and influence can still be felt throughout the property, and there is even a small museum displaying works gifted to the brewery by the artist (it is closed during the summer months due to humidity).

Although we could not see brewing in action, we were treated to a special opportunity to speak with the tōji and enjoy an incredible aged sake tasting prepared especially for us. My favourites? 7BY, 10BY, 11BY, and 12BY 😋

Okonomiyaki might just be one of my favorite things to eat! 😍

But this version at Horikawa in Takehara, made with sake kasu (from local Taketsuru Shuzo), was a first for me. 🍶

Rich, savory, and packed with umami, it’s a delicious local twist on one of Japan’s most beloved comfort foods.

This surprise visit to Tsuka Shuzo, the historic Akitsu brewery behind @otafuku.sake 😃

I had just been drinking Otafuku a few nights earlier because I loved the design and colorful labels, so it was a great surprise to find it as part of our tour itinerary!

And what a pleasure to meet Soichiro Tsuka-san and his family, enjoy a private tour of the brewery, and taste through the range with him while learning more about the philosophy behind these vibrant, food-friendly sake.

If you spot Otafuku on a menu or shop shelf, I highly recommend give it a try 😉🍶

What an incredible opportunity to visit Sakakiyama Hachiman Shrine in Akitsu, Hiroshima - a place deeply connected to the history of Japanese sake ✨

The shrine is home to a statue of Miura Senzaburo (1847-1908), the pioneering brewer whose soft-water brewing techniques helped shape Hiroshima’s elegant ginjo style and transformed the region into one of Japan’s most respected sake-producing areas.

During our visit, we were incredibly lucky to receive a blessing ceremony from the shrine priest, and of course explore the beautiful shrine grounds, with the monument dedicated to Miura Senzaburo, and the amazing stone sake barrels 🍶

For anyone interested in sake history, this is a special place honouring the people and craftsmanship that helped define Hiroshima’s brewing culture 🙏🍶⛩️

Must eat when in Saijo: Bishunabe 🍲🍶😸

No better place to try it than Kuradokoro TARU, serving the local Hiroshima specialty made by simmering chicken, pork, and vegetables directly in generous amounts of sake instead of broth. The alcohol mostly cooks off, leaving behind a rich umami flavour that pairs dangerously well with the incredible local sake!

Fabulous night, maybe a tiny bit too much sake, but totally worth it ☺️🍶

What a great time exploring the seven sake breweries of Saijō, Hiroshima 🍶✨

If you love sake or are simply sake curious and in Hiroshima - make sure to jump on a train to Saijō and spend the day discovering one of Japan’s most famous brewing districts!

Best part: Everything is easily walkable, relaxed, and filled with incredible local sake, history, and atmosphere.
